Working with a personal trainer in a group setting allows you to progress quickly towards your goals — as an athlete or just in life.
CrossFit Chiang Mai is the first CrossFit affiliate in Thailand. We focus on nutrition, strength and conditioning as three important components of fitness. Workouts are scaled for each individual athlete's level of strength and fitness, pre-existing injuries or other special concerns. Workouts include a mix of running, Olympic weightlifting, gymnastics, conditioning and other activities.
CrossFit Chiang Mai is partnered with the International Sustainable Development Studies Institute (ISDSI), an expedition based experiential learning program focused on culture and ecology (see www.isdsi.org for more). ISDSI students do CrossFit as a part of their semester in Thailand, and ISDSI instructors do CrossFit and help lead classes at CrossFit Chiang Mai.
Our trainersMark Ritchie is a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer (CF-L1), USAW Olympic Weightlifting Coach certified, CrossFit Mobility certified, a Wilderness First Responder (WFR), and has lived in Thailand for about 20 years. He has been a rock climbing instructor, and has a background in adventure sports (climbing, sea kayaking, backpacking, etc.). He's also the executive director of ISDSI, and the father of Miriam and Lydia and married to Dana.
Matt Groves is a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer (CF-L1), CrossFit Football certified, USAW Olympic Weightlifting Coach certified, and has a background playing American football. He originally came to Chiang Mai to study Thai, and stayed to train and coach at CrossFit Chiang Mai.
Monica Kientz is a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer (CF-L1). She is also CrossFit Kids certified and CrossFit Mobility certified. She is a certified USAW Olympic Weightlifting coach and has completed the Starting Strength Coaching course. She has a background as a competitive sailor. Monica is married to Michael and the mom of three kids.
Barry Lavis is a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer (CF-L1), a certified USAW Olympic Weightlifting coach, and has an excellent background in strength and CrossFit.
Taylor Cantril is a CrossFit Level 1 Certified Trainer (CF-L1), as well as a field instructor with ISDSI.
Pui (Siriporn) Klaptung is a certified USAW Olympic Weightlifting Coach, a Wilderness First Responder (WFR) as well as a field instructor with ISDSI.
Tik (Ankarin) Pimpang is a certified USAW Olympic Weightlifting Coach, as well as a field instructor with ISDSI.
Guest trainers: We also offer special seminars, workshops and workouts with many of the outstanding folks who are based in or traveling through Chiang Mai.
Gym & Equipment
We've built CrossFit Chiang Mai to take advantage of sustainable design where we can -- no walls (or not many) and what we have are more of a woven bamboo screen. The gym is open air (great especially for morning workouts) with mist fans for when it gets hot. We've also planted bamboo around the edges to keep things cool naturally, as well as to filter dust.
We've incorporated some recycled materials into the design as well -- the concrete floor was poured over rubble from the old garage we pulled down to build our gym, and our set of lockers was reclaimed and repainted. Our big tires for flipping were, of course, used, and better yet, free!
We've built a shed for the equipment with roll-down doors, and also two hot showers and a toilet. The concrete pad for the showers and toilet re-used part of an older concrete pad, and incorporated recycled rubble and brick.
